
The North West Department of Education’s MEC, Viola Motsumi, has extended her warmest congratulations to the South African Special Olympics team on their impressive performance at the Special Olympics World Winter Games, held in Turin, Italy.
The South African team made the country proud by securing a total of seven medals. Naledi Hlaele led the pack with a gold medal in Figure Skating, while Bianca Basson, Kenneth Mokabo, and Shane Bentley each took home silver medals in their respective disciplines. Tyrell Sykes and Shirnel Swarts added to the team’s medal tally with bronze medals in Figure Skating and Short Track Speed Skating, respectively.
The Special Olympics World Winter Games, which concluded on Saturday, 15 March 2025, brought together athletes with intellectual disabilities from around the world to compete in various winter sports. The games provided a unique opportunity for these athletes to showcase their talents, build friendships, and experience the thrill of competition.
MEC Motsumi’s congratulatory message is particularly significant, as the department is preparing to host the 2026 Special Olympics.
The Department’s decision to host the 2026 Special Olympics is a testament to its commitment to promoting inclusivity and providing opportunities for learners with special needs. By hosting this prestigious event, the North West province aims to make a positive impact on the lives of these learners and promote a culture of acceptance and understanding.
