NWDOE ACCELERATE SCHOOL SECURITY PROGRAMME AND BOOST LOCAL ECONOMY.

The North West Department of Education MEC Viola Motsumi, today Wednesday, 03 June 2026 convened a detailed meeting with Cochrane, the company responsible for constructing security fences at schools across the province, particularly in areas affected by gang-related activities.

MEC Motsumi expressed her satisfaction that the company successfully created opportunities for local SMMEs, contributing to local economic development and community safety. This security fence programme remains one of the commitments that MEC Motsumi made last year during her budget speech that school communities were infiltrated by crime and burglary will receive a security fence to assist in protecting the schools from experiencing criminal activities.

“The safeguarding of our schools is about protecting teachers, learners, and restoring a calm mind for parents. Through partnering with Cochrane, we are practically delivering safety measures while also being in support of local communities by creating jobs and improving local economic growth,” says Motsumi.

Motsumi has recently reviewed work at several schools, including Meriti Secondary School in Rustenburg, Arefadimeng Secondary in Potchefstroom and John Frynlick Primary in Vryburg, where there are rampant criminal incidents experienced by schools from their local communities.
