The North West Department of Education is devastated after receiving reports that two learners from Roshunville Primary School, a Grade R and Grade 6 learners together with their driver, lost their lives in a tragic road accident.

The accident occurred on the road between Schweizer-Reneke and Amalia on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, after the private vehicle in which they were travelling in allegedly collided with a bakkie.

It is reported that after the learners attended extra classes, they were on their way home when a bakkie collided with their vehicle. The two learners and the driver died at the scene of the accident, while a parent and another learner who were travelling in the same vehicle sustained serious injuries. The injured victims are currently recuperating in hospital.

The MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, who was deeply disturbed by the report, pleaded with the public to pray against the increasing number of learner-related accidents.

“On behalf of the Department, we are extremely disturbed by this news and I wish to convey our deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We also wish a speedy recovery to the injured parent and learner. I would like to plead with the general public to pray for the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District against all forms of accidents affecting the district. Last month, we were burying learners from Vryburg High School who also perished in a road accident,” said MEC Motsumi.

At this stage, details regarding the memorial service and funeral arrangements are not yet available. The Department will communicate the details once consultations with the affected families have been concluded.
