
The Multimedia and School Library Services Unit for the North West Department of Education has organised a Provincial event to celebrate International Literacy Day today ( 12th September 2025) at Monnanere Primary School, Ramotshere Moiloa in Ngaka Modiri Molema District.
The event is celebrated in a rotational format by the Department-and was celebrated at Dr Kenneth Kaunda in 2024.
The 2025 event is celebrated under the theme ” Promoting Literacy in Digital Space”
The main purpose of the celebration is to keep pace with the evolving education in the current technologically driven world. The celebration is staged to highlight the importance of high literacy rates in society and in schools in particular, especially at foundation level. Furthermore, it was intended to continue to raise and strengthen awareness of literacy as a foundation and cornerstone of the education system throughout the Province.
The Department has therefore invited 15 Primary Schools(Grade 4 _ 07) from Lerato Circuit in Ramotshere Moiloa to showcase their talent in Poetry, Reading Aloud _ Short Stories and News Broadcasts categories.
The celebration also prioritised sharpening Learners ability to read for meaning both in English and Setswana and acquire them the opportunity to demonstrate their confidence and eloguency in presenting their stories and speeches in front of other learnees, teachers and departmental officials.
They demonstrated their talents in reading books, stories and poems of their choice to showcase their proficiency and ability to present in front of the audience.

Part of Key stakeholders who partnered with the department to make the literacy day, a huge success were:Nalli Bali, Room to read, Publishers, Lehurutshe Public Library and Blue Ribbon.
The stakeholders emphasised the importance of utilising their facilities for educational purposes and promotion of. Education in the North West Province.
Ms Molebogeng Maake, a Language Practitioner from the University of the Northwest highlighted the importance of Promoting digital space to have access to better opportunities and a brighter future., during her Keynote address.
She expantiated on the importance of reading and writing which pave the way for the provisioning of high acess to languages, other people and the entire world. She further emphasised the importance of incorporating digital space into curriculum and in ensuring Digital safety and security in navigation through the implementation process thereof.
Ms Maake also advised the Department to continue with the implementation of the traditional way of digital space as it is still very important.
The International Literacy Day was established by UNESCO in 1967 and is celebrated annually on the 08th of September world-wide but this year the department has set to celebrate it on the 12th of September 2025 to allow all proper logistical preparations for the celebration.
The event was attended by Library and Multimedia Services Team from Corporate and Districts offices as well as Learners, Teachers and different Stakeholders who are dedicated to supporting education in the Province.
