
The North West Department of Education is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of a Grade 10 girl learner from Huhudi Secondary School in Ganyesa – Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District on Friday 08 August 2025.
According to preliminary reports, the learner experienced a medical emergency during school hours. The principal immediately notified the learner’s parents and called for an ambulance. The learner’s mother arrived at the school while awaiting emergency services, together with a teacher transported the learner to the nearest clinic, where she sadly passed away.
The Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, classmates, teachers, and the entire Huhudi Secondary School community during this time of grief. MEC for Education in the North West Viola Motsumi, has expressed her condolences and calls for the Department’s cooperation with relevant authorities during the investigation.
“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of such a young life. On behalf of the Department, I extend our prayers and support to the family, friends, and school community during this painful time. The wellbeing of our learners is our utmost priority, and I urge that the school works closely with the relevant authorities to understand what happened”, MEC Motsumi expressed.
At this stage, the cause of death remains unknown. The Department wishes for a speedy conclusion of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. To provide comfort and assistance during this difficult time, the Department has organised psychosocial support services for the family, learners and staff at the school, which will be made available from Monday, 11 August 2025.
