Education and General School Assistants Reported for Duty (Reopening of Schools in NW)

The North West Department of Education is pleased to announce that all Education Assistants and General School Assistants appointed through the the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) Phase V have reported for duty at their respective schools on the reopening of schools on Tuesday, 22 July 2025.

This significant milestone marks the beginning of a new era in supporting teaching and learning in our schools. The North West Province is set to benefit from the services of 13,687 assistants, strategically deployed to support learners and educators. The number of assistants allocated to each school is determined by the school’s quintile ranking, with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 assistants per school.

Dr Carol Letshabo, the Basic Education Education Initiative Phase V Provincial Project Manager, would like to inform the assistants that to ensure their success, the Department will provide comprehensive training programs, categorized into eight distinct areas:

Education Assistants:
– Laboratory Assistants
– Workshop Assistants
– Reading Champions
– Curriculum Assistants
– Care and Support Assistants
– ICT Assistants
General School Assistants:
– Sports Enrichment Assistants
– Handyperson

The MEC for Department, Viola Motsumi welcomed the assistants for responding positively to the call
“I would like to extend my warm welcome to all the newly appointed assistants and wish them a fruitful journey in our schools. Their participation in the programme will give them a first hand work experience.

“These assistants will play a vital role in supporting our educators and learners, enhancing the overall quality of education in our province. The Department looks forward to working with them to achieve our goals and improve the quality of education for our learners”, said MEC Motsumi.

There will be trainings per focus area that is intended to empower them to do well in their respective roles. Schools will be notified on time to release the assistants.
