The North West Education and Sport Development have experienced a huge volume of incidents that threatened safety of teachers and learners at school. Sometimes this resulted in the loss of lives at school which is something that the department opposes very strong.
The incident at Ramotshere Moiloa Secondary School, where a learner stabbed an educator to death, has created a lot of anxiety and uncertainty among educators and learners. Recently a learner stabbed to death another learner with a scissor at Mateane Primary School.
In addressing challenges of school safety the department resolved in hosting a Provincial School Safety Summit and it will provide a platform for debate and reaching amicable solutions to ensure improved safety measures in schools. It also has the potential of increasing the number of stakeholder participation in school governance as their participation is almost non-existent.
The planned Provincial School Safety Summit will seek to understand the perceptions and experiences of educational stakeholders and social partners with regards to safety and learner discipline in public schools. Further examine challenges of school safety and disciplinary policy development, implementation and to review learner and educator disciplinary measures.
About 600 people from different institutions across the province are expected to attend this summit.
The planned Provincial School Safety Summit will be hosted as follows:
Time: 09:00
Date: 12 – 13 March 2019
Venue: Kgaswane Country Lodge, Rustenburg next to Protea Hunters Rest Hotel
Members of the media are invited to cover the event.
