The North West MEC for Education Hon. Ntsetsao Viola Motsumi, today officially handed over a contractor appointed to construct the new School of Autism in Dinokana Village, Zeerust, under Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.
This handover marks a major milestone in the Department’s commitment to inclusive education and ensures learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions will have access to specialised dignified learning environments in the Province.
Proposed Indicative Scope: ECD, Foundation Phase, Intermediate and Senior Phase curriculum classrooms and support spaces, ECD, Foundation Phase, Intermediate and Senior Phase outdoor play areas, Vocational Phase workshops as per curriculum, Library, Administration areas, School Hall, Main Kitchen and Dining area. Therapy and Wellness areas including spaces for Nurse, Physiotherapist, Occupation Therapist. Speech therapist, Social Worker, Educational Psychologist, Parking and drop off areas, Janitorial and maintenance services spaces, Hostel accommodation for learners and staff accommodation to be considered.
Speaking at the handover, MEC Motsumi remarked: “Today we turn the sod on hope. Every child, regardless of ability, has the right to education that respects their dignity and unlocks their potential. For too long, families in Zeerust had to choose between no schooling or traveling far from home. The School of Autism in Dinokana changes that narrative. This is about inclusion, early intervention, and giving these learners the support they deserve to thrive.”
With the contractor now officially handed over, construction begins immediately. The Department’s Infrastructure Unit will monitor the project to ensure quality work, adherence to timelines, and compliance with universal design principles for learners with special needs.
MEC Motsumi was joined by the traditional leadership of Donokana Village, Ward 12 Councillor under Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality, parents and SGB representatives from special schools.
“To parents and caregivers: We see you. We hear you. This school is built for your children. Our educators and therapists will be trained to provide specialized support. No child must be left behind,” MEC Motsumi emphasized.
The North West Department of Education remains committed to expanding Special Needs Education schools and resource centers across the province in line with Education White Paper 6 on Inclusive Education.
