The North West Department of Education MEC, Viola Motsumi in her efforts to improve the results in the province, embarked on an interactive session with the underperforming schools of Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District at Stellaland Primary School on Tuesday, 05 August 2025.
The primary objective of these engagements with affected School Principals and School Governing Body (SGB) Chairpersons is to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies for success. These sessions aim to drive educational success and accountability.
The slogan for the District is “95% – 100%” achievable through monitoring of in-school moderation and monitoring, quality assessment, attendance, leave management, robust LAIP implementation and evidence-based reporting accountability at all levels.
MEC Motsumi echoed her concern, that the target of the District is 95% but Grades 4 to 11 have obtained below 70%. She highlighted that this poor performance has been consistent in the district since 2024. In 2025, both Term 1 and Term 2 in the district were still in the red zone again.
MEC Motsumi expressed her satisfaction on the improvement of Term 2 for the Grade 12 class in 2025.
“I am immensely pleased with the performance registered by the Grade 12 class in term 1 and 2 respectively compared to 2024. There are positive signs which are showing and with this improvement we need to be consistent in order to achieve our target of 95%. In Term 1 and 2 the Grade 12 class obtained 85% and 84% respectively whilst the District during this period last year obtained 77% and 78%.
“The Greater Taung, Kagisano Molopo and Naledi Local Education Offices are continuing to perform poorly from Grade 4 until Grade 11. All these Local Education Offices in Grade 12 classes are performing above 80% in both Term 1 and 2. This performance gives hope to the North West province, though it is still early to celebrate at this stage”, said MEC Motsumi.
MEC Motsumi applauded Baga Mothibi, Manthe, Pudumong Clusters whose schools in the Grade 12 class obtained above 80% in Term 1 and 2 respectively. She said Batlhaping and Marubising Secondary Schools in Taung Central Centre need to improve their performance.
MEC Motsumi further expressed her concern about Kgononyane, Kromellenboog, Kgosithebe, Colinda, Bray and Pica Pau Secondary schools which obtained below 70% in Term 1 and 2. She said such results have the potential to affect the entire district if they are left unattended. Motsumi mentioned that there are some schools which are not consistent in their performance, in one Term they perform well but on the other Term they drop their performance. She mentioned that such performance should be eradicated all together.
“One should applaud the District performance in Setswana as a subject. In the first Term the subject obtained 100% whilst in the second Term they obtained 98%. This is giving us hope, that the predominant language in the province is still well persevered by our learners. Mathematics and Physical Science are not doing very well, Mathematics obtained 73% whilst Physical Science obtained 79%. I believe the district can do better in improving their performance in these subjects”, said MEC Motsumi.
MEC Motsumi recommended that the district should have weekend camps per cluster from 05 September which will be addressing STEM subjects challenges and strengthening the usage of developed worksheets on functions ( both Algebraic and Trigonometric) to assist learners in interpretation of graphs.
MEC Motsumi is expected to visit other districts namely Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Bojanala and will conclude the interactive sessions in Ngaka Modiri Molema District on Thursday, 07 August 2025.
