Mahikeng – The MEC for Education in the North West Province, Ms Ntsetsao Viola Motsumi, attended the 2026 South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod, SASCE, Provincial Competitions held at the Mmabatho Convention Centre.
Over 3,500 learners from 120 qualifying schools across Bojanala, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Ngaka Modiri Molema, and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati districts converged for the three-day event to compete in choral music, solo performances, instrumental ensembles, and folklore categories.
Addressing learners, educators, and parents during the opening, MEC Motsumi said SASCE is more than a competition – it is a platform for talent development, discipline, and social cohesion.
“SASCE gives our learners the opportunity to express themselves through music and culture while learning teamwork, confidence, and respect for diversity. The growth we see this year, with more schools from rural and special schools participating, shows that the programme is reaching those who need it most,” said MEC Motsumi.
The MEC commended educators and conductors for their dedication in preparing learners outside normal teaching hours, and thanked parents for supporting the arts in schools. She further encouraged adjudicators to provide constructive feedback that will help raise the standard of performances ahead of the national rounds.
The Department used the event to reaffirm its commitment to expanding access to SASCE, strengthening teacher training in arts and culture, and ensuring that learners from all backgrounds have an equal opportunity to participate.
The top-performing choirs and ensembles from the provincial rounds will represent the North West Province at the National SASCE Championships later this year.
