The North West Department of Education MEC, Viola Motsumi and the Bakwena Ba Mogopa Traditional Council held a follow-up meeting with Glencore Mine on the partnership to build the new Bakwena High School at Glencoe Mine in Rustenburg on Tuesday, 04 August 2026.
The Bakwena Ba Mogopa Traditional Council, led by Kgosi Motheo Mamogale, together with the Department of Education, engaged Glencore Mine regarding the Memorandum of Agreement signed for the construction of the new Bakwena High School.
The new school will include the following state-of-the-art facilities namely; Admission block, Classrooms, Ablution facilities, Science laboratory, Computer and Media Centre, NSNP Kitchen, Library, Soccer field with track, and Cricket field.
Speaking during the meeting, Kgosi Mamogale emphasized that the project must prioritize the employment of local citizens and the empowerment of local businesses to ensure the community directly benefits from the development.
In addition to Bakwena High School, Glencore Mine has also committed to further infrastructure development in the area. This includes amongst others:
- Building a new administration block for Lerothodi High School
- Building ablution facilities for Mojagedi High School
- Build two additional classrooms for Mamogale Segole Primary School
Furthermore, Glencore, in partnership with the North West Department of Education, will also provide teacher support and training to strengthen teaching and learning in the affected schools.
The construction of Bakwena High School is set to commence on 26 August 2026, with a partial handover expected in December 2027 and the official handover scheduled for 2028.
The MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, emphasised that government cannot deliver quality services on its own and requires strong partnerships with the private sector to meet the needs of communities.
“Collaboration and partnerships are critical to effective service delivery. Government resources are limited, and we rely on the support of the private sector to extend our reach and ensure that no community is left behind. We sincerely appreciate the support provided by Glencore. Their contribution will go a long way in improving the learning environment in our schools and creating better opportunities for our learners,” said MEC Motsumi.
